Armenia SIM Card vs eSIM: Viva, Ucom or Team? Internet Guide (2026)

Most visitors base themselves in Yerevan and take day trips to Garni and Geghard, Lake Sevan, Dilijan and the Tatev monastery. Armenia is compact, and its mobile networks cover the populated areas well.

Armenia also has some of the cheapest local tourist bundles in the region. So here is an honest look at when a local SIM wins and when an eSIM is the better choice.

Quick answer: staying two weeks or more, and want a local number for taxi apps? Buy the local tourist bundle at Zvartnots. On a short trip, or doing Armenia and Georgia together? Use an eSIM and be online the moment you land.

Armenia's mobile networks

•         Viva (formerly Viva-MTS): the largest operator, reporting near-total population coverage.

•         Ucom (formerly Orange Armenia): strong 4G with a growing 5G network.

•         Team (formerly Beeline Armenia).

Option 1: The local tourist bundle

All three operators have 24/7 counters at Zvartnots airport. Each has sold a 15-day tourist bundle with unlimited data for around 2,500 AMD (about $7). Ucom's uWelcome and Team's Be Free bundles are sold only at the airport. You need your passport to register.

A local number also has a practical benefit. Local taxi apps such as GG and Yandex Go sometimes fail to deliver SMS verification codes to foreign numbers.

Option 2: Use a travel eSIM

An eSIM makes sense when convenience matters more than squeezing the price. You might be landing on a 3 a.m. flight (common at Zvartnots), on a short city break, or moving between Georgia and Armenia. You install it at home, it connects on landing, and you keep your home SIM for bank codes. Our Armenia eSIM plans start at $2.50 with hotspot included. Check your phone with the compatibility checker.

Tip: use both

Some travelers use an eSIM to get online the minute they land, book a ride into Yerevan, and buy a local SIM later if they are staying longer. With a dual-SIM phone, the two sit side by side.

Coverage outside Yerevan

Yerevan, Sevan and Dilijan are well covered. On mountain roads toward Tatev and in the south, expect occasional dead spots in deep valleys. The Wings of Tatev cable car area and remote monasteries can be patchy. Download offline maps before long drives.

Coming from Georgia?

Tbilisi to Yerevan is one of the classic overland trips in the Caucasus. Each country needs its own plan, and you can set up both before you leave home. See our Georgia internet guide.

How to set up your Armenia eSIM

1.       Buy the plan and install it over Wi-Fi before departure, using our installation guide.

2.       Leave the eSIM line off until you land.

3.       At Zvartnots, turn it on and enable data roaming for that line.

FAQ

Is a local SIM cheaper than an eSIM in Armenia?

For long stays with heavy data use, often yes. For short trips, the difference is a few dollars, and the eSIM saves the counter.

Will I get an Armenian number with the eSIM?

No. Travel eSIMs are data plans. If you need GG or Yandex Go verification by SMS, a local SIM is the more reliable route.

Can I hotspot?

Yes. Hotspot is included on our Armenia plans.
