Albania SIM Card vs eSIM: Internet Guide for Travelers (2026)

Albania has gone from an off-the-radar stop to one of the busiest destinations in the Balkans. Most trips combine Tirana, the Riviera around Sarandë and Ksamil, and a few days in the Albanian Alps. You will want mobile data for all of it: ride-hailing and buses in Tirana, maps on the coast road, and messaging when the hostel Wi-Fi gives up.

One thing catches EU visitors out: Albania is not part of the EU "Roam Like at Home" zone. Your home plan may charge full roaming rates the moment you land, so sort out data before you go.

Quick answer: for a trip under three weeks, a travel eSIM is the simplest option. Install it at home, and it connects when you land in Tirana. For a longer stay with heavy data use, a local Vodafone or One tourist package can work out cheaper.

Albania's mobile networks

Albania has two main operators. Vodafone Albania is the largest. One Albania was formed in 2023 when One Telecommunications (formerly Telekom Albania) merged with ALBtelecom. Both run 4G across the populated parts of the country, and both received 5G spectrum in late 2024, so 5G is appearing in the main cities.

Option 1: Buy a local SIM

•         Where: the Vodafone counter at Tirana airport is the usual first stop. City shops of both operators are cheaper and have more choice.

•         What you need: your passport. The SIM is registered to you at the counter.

•         Cost: tourist packages have typically run from about 1,000 to 2,900 ALL (roughly $10–30), with airport prices on the higher side.

•         Downside: queues after a late arrival, a physical SIM swap, and your home number goes offline unless your phone takes two SIMs.

Option 2: Use a travel eSIM

A travel eSIM is a data plan you download to your phone before the trip. There is no counter, no passport check and no SIM swap. You keep your home SIM in the phone for calls and bank texts while the eSIM handles data.

Our Albania eSIM plans start at $2.00, include hotspot, and activate in a couple of minutes from a QR code. Check that your phone is unlocked and eSIM-capable with the compatibility checker first.

Which one should you choose?

•         Short trip, or Albania as one stop on a Balkans route: eSIM. You are online the moment you land and can add a plan for the next country before you cross.

•         A month or more with lots of streaming: a local package may give more gigabytes per dollar, if you do not mind the counter.

•         Arriving late at night: eSIM. You can book a ride from the airport without hunting for an open shop.

Where the signal drops

Tirana, Durrës and the Riviera towns have solid 4G. The mountains are a different story. On the road to Theth and the Valbona–Theth hiking pass, expect long stretches with weak or no signal. Download offline maps and your accommodation details before you leave the valley towns, whichever SIM you use.

Crossing into Montenegro, Kosovo or North Macedonia

Many travelers continue north to Kotor or east to Ohrid. An Albania plan covers Albania only, so add a plan for the next country before you cross. If Montenegro is next, read our Montenegro internet guide.

How to set up your Albania eSIM

1.       Buy your plan and open the QR code email while you are on Wi-Fi at home.

2.       Install the eSIM by scanning the QR code. Our installation guide covers iPhone, Samsung and Pixel.

3.       Leave the eSIM line switched off until you land, then turn it on and enable data roaming for that line.
