Georgia (Country) SIM Card vs eSIM: Internet in Tbilisi & Beyond (2026)

This guide is about Georgia the country: Tbilisi, Batumi, Kazbegi and the Caucasus, not the US state. Georgia is one of the easiest countries in the region to travel on a budget, and mobile data makes it easier still. You will use it for Bolt rides from the airport, maps on marshrutka routes, and translating Georgian script.

Quick answer: if you want data the moment you land in Tbilisi or Kutaisi, use a travel eSIM. If you are staying several weeks and want the cheapest gigabytes, Magti's airport tourist package is good value.

Georgia's mobile networks

Three operators share the market: Magti, Silknet and Cellfie, which was previously Beeline Georgia. Magti is generally known for the widest coverage outside the cities, which matters if you are heading into the mountains.

Option 1: Buy a local SIM at the airport

•         Where: Magti sells tourist SIMs at Tbilisi and Kutaisi airports. Silknet and Cellfie have shops in the cities.

•         Cost: Magti's airport packages include 5 GB for 15 GEL and a 3 GB package with international minutes for 30 GEL, both valid 15 days.

•         What you need: plan on showing your passport when registering a physical SIM.

•         Downside: budget flights into Kutaisi often land at odd hours, and you are swapping SIMs in an arrivals hall.

Option 2: Use a travel eSIM

With an eSIM you install the plan at home and switch it on when the plane lands. You keep your home number for calls and banking texts. Our Georgia eSIM plans start at $2.50 with hotspot included. Check your phone first with the compatibility checker.

Which one should you choose?

•         Trip under two weeks: eSIM. The convenience is worth more than the small price difference.

•         Long stay or remote work from Tbilisi: a local package gives more data per lari, and you get a Georgian number for local apps.

•         Georgia plus Armenia on one trip: eSIM, adding a plan for each country before you cross.

Coverage in the mountains

Tbilisi, Batumi and Kutaisi have fast 4G and growing 5G. On the Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi, and deeper in Svaneti or Tusheti, signal comes and goes with the valleys. No operator guarantees coverage in every gorge. Download offline maps and your guesthouse's address before leaving town.

Heading to Armenia next?

The Tbilisi–Yerevan route is one of the most popular overland crossings in the Caucasus. A Georgia plan works in Georgia only, so set up an Armenia plan before the border. Our Armenia internet guide covers the details.

How to set up your Georgia eSIM

1.       Buy your plan and keep the QR code email handy.

2.       Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you fly. See our installation guide.

3.       On landing, switch the eSIM line on and enable data roaming for it.

FAQ

Is this for Georgia the country or the US state?

The country. For the US state, you need a United States plan.

Will I get a Georgian phone number?

No. Travel eSIMs are data plans. Use WhatsApp or Telegram for calls and messages.

Does the eSIM work in Kutaisi and Batumi?

Yes. The plan covers the whole country wherever the partner network has signal.
